Research and pedagogical staff of the Department of Oncology and Radiology take an active part in the preparation of applications for funding of scientific research both at the expense of the Ministry of Education and Science and the National Fund of Ukraine, as well as international programs.
In 2018, a grant was received for the state budget funding of research work “The effectiveness of liquid biopsy and tissue biopsy in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors” (state registration №: 0118U003570). The study was conducted from 2018 to 2020 under the leadership of the head of the department Vynnychenko I.O. Within the framework of the research work, the establishment of a laboratory of molecular genetic research was initiated. In March 2019, based on the University Clinic of Sumy State University, it began operating. The work was launched with the participation of a guest specialist Tibor Füle from Thermo Fisher Scientific Company, who conducted practical training for employees and graduate students of Medical Institute, SSU on working with the QuantStudio 3D Digital PCR System and installed the device itself. Currently, the laboratory is equipped and has in its use: QuantStudio 3D Digital PCR System, fluorimeter for measuring the concentration of DNA and RNA, laminar flow cabinets, vortex mini-centrifuges, high-speed mini-centrifuge, and other additional equipment.
At this stage, graduate students conduct their research in the laboratory. They study circulating tumor DNA and quantify PIK3CA, TP53, BRAF, and KRAS mutations in breast and colorectal cancer patients. The results of research in the form of abstracts are presented at national and international conferences and published in domestic and international scientific journals.
On the basis of the Department of Oncology and Radiology and Sumy Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary since 2002, the International Center for Clinical Research has been successfully operating, headed by the head of the department Vynnychenko I.O. For many years, patients with various localizations of the malignant process, including tumors of the head and neck, lungs, breast, stomach, and intestines, have been receiving the latest treatment free of charge according to international standards. The results of clinical trials are published in the most authoritative peer-reviewed publications in the world.
